Nobody knows whether or not they’re doing nothing. That figure of them losing money and lasting for several decades was an argument used for those people who thought Nintendo will go down in a couple years and die, or go the way of Sega because “they’d have no other option.” They may have money, but deliberately choosing to lose more of it as a long term plan is monumentally stupid. They’d give the fans what they want, and yes, they have enough money to sustain themselves, but losing money every year isn’t a very smart business idea. Your proposed solution of “well, they could give us the games they want and lose money, it doesn’t matter, they have lots of money!” isn’t a good one. Mario Kart (yes, it has Mario’s face on it, but it’s CLEARLY a different franchise from Super Mario) sells in great quantities as does Smash Bros. Metroid would maybe get another million people to buy a Wii U (and that’s being optimistic), and then it’ll go back to a very low amount. F-Zero would make a few hundred thousand people buy a Wii U, but then it’d go back to selling in very low amounts. Putting out niche franchises like their older IPs won’t solve that, that’s simply how it is. They’re losing money on Wii U in general.
#MARIO KART 7 3DS KICKASS INSTALL#
Even 3D World, doomed to sell less than all other Marios because it’s on a console with a VERY small install base, is on its way to pass 2 million copies sold. They also have their EAD Tokyo team (the A team for Mario games) experimenting with the 3D Mario franchise by mixing elements with the 2D games. Nintendo wanted to take advantage of this, so they made two more. Selling 30 million, and then 27 million on the following iteration is no joke.

They’ve been over saturating Mario… but this is likely a response to how many people bought the New SMB games on DS and Wii. I’ve nothing against Metroid, I’m just saying that it’s not a big franchise. I mean… seriously, Metroid Prime 3 didn’t even get 2 million in sales, and it was released on Wii… a console with 100 million owners. Nintendo figured that Donkey Kong was a better choice because it was a better selling game. See, most people who actually buy games don’t sign stupid petitions, they just buy the games that they want. Given that more people bought Donkey Kong, they figured that this is what people want. Why else did Retro go with Donkey Kong and not Metroid? Donkey Kong on Wii sold more than all three Metroid Prime games combined. So just because you see a bunch of loud people demanding for it doesn’t mean it’ll translate into lots of sales. Metroid also isn’t a big seller compared to other Nintendo franchises. Those franchises sell very few copies, particularly F-Zero. Sounds like “everyone wants a new one” right? Guess what, no they don’t. The internet is clamoring for a new Star Fox and a new F-Zero. Melee, and that sold only 7 million.Īlso, Reggie didn’t say Nintendo “doesn’t give fans what they want.” He was making a point regarding how petitions aren’t the best motivator because not everyone signing the petition is someone looking to buy a certain game.

GameCube’s best selling title was Super Smash Bros. I wouldn’t be surprised if Mario Kart 8 pulled a Double Dash and sold around 3-4 million copies due to the smaller install base.
